Skincare 101: Getting Started

So you want to start taking better care of your skin, but have no idea where to begin. Maybe you've scrolled through TikTok and seen people with 12-step routines and a bathroom shelf that looks like a pharmacy. No need to panic, you won't need any of those at this point in your journey.

Good skincare doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, the best place to start is with just a handful of products and a basic understanding of what they do.

## The Basics...

Every skincare routine, no matter how simple or advanced, is built on the same foundation: **cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen**. Start using these three, and your skin and appearance will already improve significantly.

### Cleanser

There's a huge difference between washing your face with whatever bar soap is in the shower and using a proper facial cleanser. Most products not intended for the face will strip your skin, throwing off its natural pH, and leaving it either tight and dry or overproducing oil to compensate. A gentle facial cleanser removes dirt, oil, and buildup without wrecking your skin barrier in the process. And we do want to preserve that skin barrier!

### Moisturizer

Every skin type needs moisture. Yes, even oily skin. When your skin is dehydrated, it actually produces more oil to compensate, which leads to breakouts and that greasy-but-tight feeling nobody enjoys. A good moisturiser keeps your skin balanced, protected, and comfortable. And that's not all that a good moisturiser does; it also acts as a sealant, locking in whatever treatments you are using. If your skin is oily, go for a lightweight gel or another water-based moisturiser. If it's dry, a richer cream with a lipidic base will work better.

### Sunscreen

This is the single most important product in your routine, and the one most people skip. UV damage is responsible for most of the ageing signs your skin will start showing. Wrinkles, dark spots, uneven tone, and loss of elasticity can all be delayed or prevented entirely by using high SPF. Even if it's cloudy, even through windows, the sun damage will affect your skin. Sunscreen is a non-negotiable. Think of it as the one product that protects all the work your other products are doing.

## ...and more

If you have these three steps figured out, you are already in a very good place. Now this is where things get interesting. Maybe you want to tackle some specific issues that your skin has, be it acne, rosacea, or some fine lines. That's where treatments come in. I am talking about those active ingredients you see every skin influencer using, the ones that sound intimidating and make you confused about where to start. Let's break down the most common ones, and you will see how simple it actually is to build a routine that works for your skin.

### Niacinamide

A great all-rounder. It helps control oil, minimises the look of pores, evens out skin tone, and strengthens your skin barrier. If you're not sure where to start, this is a safe bet for almost everyone.

### Vitamin C

An antioxidant that brightens your skin, fades dark spots, and protects against environmental damage. Best used in the morning, under your sunscreen.

### Hyaluronic acid

Draws moisture into your skin and holds it there. Great for anyone dealing with dryness or dehydration, and gentle enough that it works for sensitive skin too.

### Retinoid

The gold standard for anti-ageing. It speeds up cell turnover, smooths fine lines, helps with acne, and improves overall texture. But it's strong, start with a low concentration and only use it at night. Your skin needs time to build tolerance. And I can't stress this enough: use sunscreen the next day!

### Salicylic acid (BHA)

If you're dealing with breakouts, blackheads, or clogged pores, this is your ingredient. It gets into your pores and clears them out from the inside. Usually found in cleansers or leave-on treatments.

### Glycolic acid (AHA)

An exfoliant that removes dead skin cells from the surface, helping with dullness, rough texture, and uneven tone. Start with a lower percentage and work your way up. And at the risk of sounding like a broken record, do not forget to apply sunscreen the next day!

Important to know is that most likely you won't need all of these. You probably need one or two, based on your skin type and concerns. If you haven't already, make sure to take the quiz in the KnowYourSkin app and learn more about your skin type and concerns. Once you do, we will be able to guide you in the right direction and help you build a routine that will give you that glowy, smooth, even skin we are all aiming for.

## A word of caution

Not all actives work well together. Using too many at once, or combining the wrong ones on the same night, can irritate your skin and do more harm than good. A few rules to keep in mind:

- Don't use AHAs or BHAs on the same night as retinol. That's too much exfoliation at once, and your skin barrier will be damaged.
- Introduce one new active at a time. Use it for at least two weeks before adding another. That way, if your skin reacts, you know exactly what caused it.
- More is not better. A pea-sized amount of retinol will do its job. Slathering on extra won't speed things up, it'll just irritate your skin.
- And of course, make sure you apply SPF 50 sunscreen. This should be a non-negotiable every day, but it's especially important the day after using strong actives.

## When to use what

Your routine has different goals for mornings and evenings. Mornings are all about protection. Cleanse, apply your morning serum - usually a vitamin C or a niacinamide serum, moisturise, apply sunscreen, and you are good to go. Quick and simple. Evenings are all about repairing your skin. Cleansing in the evening is extremely important, and ideally, you should double cleanse. Use a gentle oil-based cleanser first, to break up makeup, sunscreen, pollution and dirt, then use a water-based cleanser as well to make sure your skin is clean. Continue then with your treatments - exfoliants, retinoids, hydration, on alternate nights. The last step is your moisturiser, which will restore your skin barrier and lock all those goodies in.

## One last thing

Don't try to fix everything at once. The biggest mistake beginners make is buying five new products, using them all on the same night, and then wondering why their skin freaked out. Start with the basics. Use them consistently for a few days, maybe even weeks if your skin is sensitive or reactive. Let your skin adjust. Then layer in one active at a time based on your concerns.

Your quiz results should already tell you what your skin needs. If you haven't taken the quiz, you should. Your routine is built around that. Trust the process, stay consistent, and give it time, most active ingredients take 4 to 8 weeks to show real results.

Your skin will thank you for it.
